Hey fellow coffee people, thanks for dropping by my blog!

My name is Matt, and I’ve been near coffee in some form for much of my adult life. Despite spending many formative years hanging out in coffee shops, I only discovered the world of specialty coffee in 2010 during a trip to Seattle. Since then it’s been an exciting journey from consumer to enthusiast to home-barista and overall coffee advocate. I started The Coffee Minimalist in September 2014 as a way to share my love of coffee with others, and through this space I chronicle my personal struggle to understand the bean, the brew and the amazing culture that surrounds it.

I’m also a husband and father of one (with another on the way), a bright little boy I like to call our “future barista champion”. I brew coffee for myself and family every day, and I try to squeeze in some writing in between work and the unknown that is parenting. My day job is mostly custom software design and programming, and non caffeinated hobbies hover around photography and boardgames.

New blog posts are every Monday, with an occasional bonus post on Friday.

So why The Coffee Minimalist?

Before I dove into coffee, I floated from one hobby to the next, often racking up impressive collections of stuff, yet never finding fulfillment in the collector’s mindset. Around the same time that I stumbled into coffee, I started reading minimalist blogs such as Zen Habits and Becoming Minimalist, and I set out to intentionally reduce my possessions and focus on what mattered most. Since then I’ve focused primarily on coffee, learning everything I can, while continually pairing down the unnecessary things that clutter my life. So when I needed to choose a name for this blog, The Coffee Minimalist just seemed to fit.

This is also why you’ll see no advertisements on this blog. I intend to keep it clean and focused, without the banner ads or popups or other visual noise, so that we can all focus on the coffee. From time to time, when mentioning a particular piece of brewing equipment or other coffee gear, I may include a link to Amazon, and these are referral links so it does help pay for the site, but aside from that I do not plan to include any ads.

My Coffee History

If you’re new to the blog, I suggest starting with this three part series on my coffee history. I covers my journey into specialty coffee, from my first sip to my first convention, and I think it’s a good way to find out who I am, in case you’ve stumbled across this page without already knowing me.

My Coffee History, part 1: Consumer

My Coffee History, part 2: Enthusiast

My Coffee History, part 3: Advocate

A note about older content: This blog went through a major design shift in October 2015, and all prior content may have occasional formatting issues and smaller photos. If you spot anything glaring that could be easily fixed, let me know and I’ll do my best to get it updated.
